The common theme that links the issues of school funding, homelessness, food justice, and environmental justice together is power, and we all know money is power. Those in power don’t want to put money towards funding schools because it requires them giving up their power to support another agenda. Those in power don’t want to do anything besides put a band aid on a deep wound, being homelessness, because it requires them giving up money and in turn giving up power. The same goes for food justice, those in power don’t want to offer healthy food to urban communities because it involves them giving up money and in turn power. Those in power are not implementing any real change to solve for environmental justice because it involves them giving up money and in turn power. Are you noticing a trend? Yes, capitalism and the money hungry ultra rich class of people are ruining the lives of many. They reduce their fellow human beings to living lives where they are undereducated because their schools are not adequately funded, then they can’t get a job because they are uneducated and not competitive in the marketplace which results in them being homeless, then say they do find a minimum wage job to live a low income neighborhood where they don’t have access to healthy foods, and on top of that their low-income community experiences environmental injustice. All because the ruling class of people, those with money, did not want to sacrifice their means to accumulate wealth. Capitalism and greed is killing a nation. Won’t you stop it? Do something today, and get your voice heard! The time is now!
Awesome post. I have a couple of questions for you: What specifically do you mean by "power"? You made a leap from power to capitalism and denounced both as though the two are inherantly evil; however, in our discussions, we listed structural issues that make it diffiicult or impossible for grocery stores to open in urban communities. We did not necessarily mention greed and evil character--what tangible explanations can you think of instead that would help your reader think of tangible solutions to these issues?
