Exhibition is almost here!

I am not nervous about exhibitions, in fact I am ahead. I have finished all of my projects and right now I am working on my speech. In my speech I want to feel emotionally intertwined with my audience , so they can grasp all that I am saying. Some tips I can share is : make sure all my assignments are in on time, have note cards prepared so I can have a good speech planned out, and take each assignment seriously so that I can have a good shot at winning the grand prize of $500.
It is important to be comfortable in public speaking so that when I am talking to a croud of people I don't have be nervous, and I can talk to the audience like I've known them for a very long time, but still with doing that be formal. Public Speaking is sometimes a challenge when I have to memorize certain things, such as a script, but It's great to have a powerpoint behind me , because if I forget something then It's there almost like a cheat card. I know my public speaking is on point when I have great transitions, and don't have to slur over my words. In the future I'm going to need to be a good public speaker because if I have a job interview with a judging panel they might ask me certain questions and I'm going to need to answer them assertively.In the future as I move to on to higher positions in my life so does my public speaking skills. The carrer I want to choose is either a physcologist, or a piediatrician. With the work profession of a pshycologist when I have my own patients , I want to be able to speak to my patients without any misunderstanding on my part.

NERVOUS :(

Right now I’m not as nervous because the presentation is kind of far away. But as the day approaches I’m sure I will be nervous. I only get nervous talking in front of people because when everybody is staring at you it’s kind of hard to not be scared. I think that a reason why I would be scared is because all the people that will be there, I get more nervous when people that I know is in the audience because they make me laugh on purpose_____NOT DONE (only had 2 mins)

i am really nt nervous bout persenting because i have done it many times before and i am really used to presenting to large groups of ppl so nerves are nott my issue. tips that i can share with you would be that to be confident bt nt to over confident and just look above every ones heads trust me it really works...lol u can also be really casual bt proffecianal when your presenting thats just what i would do. its important to be confortable with public speaking because you will end up doing it for the rest of your life and its also very important to be able to talk to any and all types of diffrent audiences and its just a part of life so u must learn bt yeah god luck every one!!!!! :)

Exhibition Presentations: Last Minute Thoughts

I’m fairly nervous about presenting, as always, but not as nervous because I am used to speaking in public now. Though, lately people have been telling me that my voice projection is not loud enough, so I need to work on speaking loudly. The other thing I am nervous about is that I have barely finished my speech and have not practiced it. So this means that I will have to be practicing my speech on Wednesday and Thursday.

The tips that I could share for handling nervous feelings are to take normal breathe and not think about presenting. Just review your speech in your head. Also look at the people who present before you, and pay attention at the thing you think they did well and do that when it’s your turn to present. But this is also learning from other people’s mistakes. You won’t do what they did wrong and you have the opportunity to do even better.

So far

a. Yes somewhat because I know there will be some parents and even some of my own family members who may be shocked of my topic. But other than that I just need to complete my PowerPoint and I will be ready for my presentation’s think that I will have some humor in my speech because of certain phrases I’ll use. I think I will be able to present in front of my family because I know them and then others family because their complete stranger

b. Kendra Johnson told me “if you’re not nervous it means you don’t care about doing” I think all you have to do is keep your mind on what you are doing and don’t think about what others think and how nervous you are.

c. It is important because if you are applying for a job or are presenting a project at your work it’s good to have the practice we are getting now and be confident and believe in what you are saying.

Reflection by Aman

Concerning the delivery of my presentation I am most nervous about comfortability. I generally do not have a problem with public speaking. However, I do not like to get up in front of a large group of people and not know what I am talking about. My confidence comes from my assurity of topic. If I feel that I am familiar with what I am to be saying then it is smooth sailing. I am not intimidated by people but at the possibility of disappointing myself. If I feel I sound incompetent than I am disappointed in myself. That is something that I am working very hard to prevent. I pray I do well.

There are some tips that I can share with my peers which can assist with nerves. One of which is to breathe and remember that you are your worst critic. Also, take comfort in knowing that the audience is made up of people who support you and understand the gaul it took to get up on the platform.

It is important for me to be comfortable with public speaking because I need. I must be able to persuade people if I am going to be an effective activist. I want to be prepared to speak in any forum and have my voice heard. The ability to speak in public goes along with that.

UNFINISHED

I am nervous, but I feel that when I start talking that the nervousness that I feel will go away. I just keep saying to myself that I won’t judge them when I’m in the audience so why should I be nervous that they will. Now I’m KINDA okay, not super man okay. I’m superman with a little kryptonite in him. I feel like this whole thing is important because we will need public speaking in a lot of the things we do or want to do in the future. Public speaking is painful at times, but also benefits you, us, in any if not everything we want to do in life.
A tip that I have is to remember the speech, try not to over-think ANYTHING. If you do you’ll start to think about the negative side to everything GOOD.

So our presentation is on Thursday at Cal Prep i have invited many friends and staff members. I am nervous for my presentation because i dont like to talk in front of people. I am nervous that i will get distracted easily and forget what i have to say.

For other people i would just recomend them to stay focus on a couple of people rather than trying to look at every single person. And also try not to move a lot like fidgeting and stepping back and forth because it sometimes becomes a distraction to the judges.

It is importnt to be comfortable with public speaking because they may be good at it. Public speaking is something everyone willl have to experience with later on in a career.

The Great Divide... Let's Create A Tide!

Financial illiteracy within individuals from unprivileged backgrounds is a universally ancient social justice issue. Since the beginning of civilization there has always been some sort of hierarchy, how a civilization separates that power is up to them. In the United States is about money. In a capitalistic society money is power and influence. Education is needed to obtain influence and in turn the power to get wealth. Specifically, financial education and the literacy thereof is a need to obtain influence to enact any other change that one may feel is important. How can one strip a people of the power they need to change things for their betterment? You strip them of their power to get wealth, education. It is no secret that the education received by those in urban areas is drastically divergent from the education received by those in upper class white suburbia neighborhoods. Therefore it also should be no secret that the education surrounding finances and financial literacy is different. It should not be like this. The federal government should push for legislature calling from the youth of today to be financially literate.

Organizations that Address This Issue

Bigger, Faster, Stronger (BFS), an organization that started in 2004, sells athletic equipment. BFS contributes to the financing of athletic programs by supporting schools and youth clubs in earning the funding they need to meet their athletic and educational goals. To meet these goals, BFS gives you accurate information on how to apply for a grant. So, you receive money that goes towards funding for athletic programs. The reason that BFS has been ineffective is because of grant funding scams.

Because there are some organizations that resemble services like BFS, some companies might bribe you into purchasing their equipment by offering to write you a grant in exchange for money from the equipment that they want you to buy. They also offer expensive equipment for you to buy, so that if you buy it, in exchange, they will receive the grant money back with the equipment that you purchase.

Briana's Excerpt From the Second Draft

This is an excerpt from my second draft. This is part of my testimony part. It is my favorite part because I know it may not seem a lot but i put it me heart into because I get  to talk about something real to me. 

It is disheartening to see kids come with minimal clothing, scars and bruises all over their bodies. You may not notice it right away but abused children will constantly have the fear of being hit whenever they see a hand raised. These children will sometimes be no more than the age of 5 years old. Seeing this at my home only made me want to retaliate even more against child abuse. Find Law stated children that are abused will usually hold it against themselves and let it be passed down to generations that come. This not only affects me how I see families but it also affects how I want to choose my friends.

However seeing this in my home was not the only close experience I had with child abuse. I saw a very close friend of mine and his siblings become victims of child abuse. To have a friend that is close to me and has to watch him want to stay in detention because he doesn’t want to go home is heartbreaking. Child abuse is not just any noun but is a cruelty that is inflicted on minor’s everyday. This cruelty affects not only the victims but also people around them.

Excerpt from My essay

According to Drugs, Society, and Human Behavior by Charles Ksir, Carl L Hart, and Okley Ray, the definition of a drug is “any substance, natural or artificial, other than food, that by its chemical nature alters structure or function in the living organisms”. So why it is that marijuana is not legalized, decriminalized, or at least available to those in need? When Shen Nug’s Pen Ts’ao, the first medical text, was written cannabis was classified it as an herb. Even today people who have chronic pain use cannabis products to treat their condition. The legalization of medical marijuana is a social justice issue because once it is legalized it will make the streets safer, act as a safer painkiller, and help the American economy.

This injustice affects people who suffer from chronic pain and youth who live in neighborhoods where marijuana is trafficked. People who suffer from cancer have to take prescription drugs that are prescribed to them, when they have the option of medical marijuana. Most pharmaceutical drugs like vicodin and duiludido have a high potency which produce strong effects like nausea on people especially people with a low body mass. However, cannabis can be controlled by the amount of THC, and that can be determined based on a patient’s body mass. There is also the risk of an overdose with most pharmaceutical drugs compared to there never being an overdose in history. Youth are affected because the same streets that the so-called “illegal marijuana” is trafficked on are the same where they live. It is possible for a ninth-grader like me to witness a “narcotic” transaction of marijuana, going to and from the school. This can influence children to use or sell drugs especially when it’s out in the open. If cannabis was legalized it would be a private matter, and there would be no need to worry that children are being exposed to drugs.

Many people think that since West Contra Costa has easy transportation because of the freeway, I-80 they’re in a safe place, but those people are wrong. Out of everyone in the Richmond community, 181 residents have asthma and 11 have died. This may not sound like a big number but out of 15 popular cities West Contra Costa in all the counties, Richmond carries the highest rate of breast, ovarian and phosphate cancers. The pollution from Chevron contributes to green house gasses and can cause serious complications to the human body. Not only is the pollution killing the people, but it is killing animals too. Animals are dying from climate changes, and over 15,000 wildlife species have become extinct. Before the industrial revolution there was a balance of carbon dioxide and greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere. For Americans in the United States, energy takes up 38% of the U.S electricity. Electricity isn’t the only source of energy that’s giving pollution to our atmosphere; fossil fuel is another source of energy.
There are many people such as scientists and organizations finding a better energy source to transport cars, but the only issue is finding an energy source that has good speed, and has gas that doesn’t run out too fast. As I explained before, right now because of the human activities fossil fuels are being let into the atmosphere, because of oil. Fossil fuels are caused from cars, trucks, and busses. All these different types of transportation. They are responsible for 50% of dangerous chemicals that are let into the earth’s atmosphere. Given the fact that fossil fuels are the reason why the air is polluted, but also why there is climate change.
Climate change is the statistical change in weather over periods of time. The climate change can be in specific regions or can appear throughout he whole earth.

Proposed Solution for SB1070 (section from essay)

The best method of dealing with this very controversial issue is compromise. Both sides of this issue might not want to compromise because they feel very strongly about their point of view and think that the other is thinking wrong. But compromising with this issue is the best way to not create any more problems.
What could happen is that the bill is passed, but racial profiling is illegal. And when checking for papers, it will be like when the police check for seat belts and drunk drivers, they check everybody in that area, not just checking the suspicious ones and leaving the other people who not likely to be a citizen. Also they should create an immigration reform to help immigrants become citizens or residents faster. But this would mean that the state of Arizona would have to create another bill instead of SB1070, and immigration laws. For example, immigrants would not be able to become a citizen or a resident if they have a criminal record or is wanted by the government in their country of origin. I think this solution would help both sides of the issue, and the boycotts would stop.

Deportation has been around for a while, ever since about the 1930s, while the great depression was going on. The great depression began on “Black Tuesday” with the Wall Street crash of October 1929, and rapidly spared worldwide. The market crash marked the begging of a decade of high unemployment, poverty, and low profits. Due to this tragedy many innocent illegal immigrants were deported back to their countries. The places that were most affected by the deportations were Orange and L.A county. Many parents were forced to leave their children behind because their children were U.S citizens, and they were not. So the children were left back not knowing who they would stay and live with, and not wanting to become foster children they decided to live on the street. While on the street they were responsible for their own actions and a lot of the time the actions they decided to do were not the best. This became a whole other big issue also because a lot of careless crimes came into place. According to Christine Valenciana deportations occurred first due to the fact that the great depression was depleting the number of jobs the so called  “Americans” had, second due to the many illegal aliens who were employed in jobs that belonged to the “Americans” which concluded in the need of the U.S getting rid of the people that were taking the jobs from the average American so they saw the best solution was to deport the illegal immigrants. While the great depression about 2 million innocent illegal immigrants were deported back to their countries. 

Favorite / Not favorite part of my paper.

When I was younger, maybe nine or ten, I rode my bike on University by Foster Freeze for ice cream. I was with my older sister (13 years old) and my niece (9 years old). My niece decided to taunt the homeless man that was talking to himself. He didn’t like that, so he got up and started toward us looking mad, luckily there were other adults nearby because they stepped in and stopped him. That experience gave me something to think about; What if he were the head of a family? If all it took was a nine year old girl mimicking him to get him mad and come after some kids is scary, not saying what she did was right and okay at all, but if a sane adult were sitting there, I think the most he would do is look the other way. And since we already know that since it’s happening now, as you’re reading this paper, we must act with great persistence and care.

Enviromental racism

In 1940, the development of environmental racism in Richmond was deeply rooted in the historically impacts of WWII. Environmental racism is when people in poor communities are being mistreated because of their ethnic race or depending on their income. This problem of environmental racism is affecting all types of people, but its main target has been African Americans because they are mostly the people with low income. This is unfair and is happening all over the world, but if we stick together it is a problem can get fixed.

Back when factories and oil refineries where first being built, was when this idea of environmental justice was being introduced. But to pin point that moment I have an example, back in 1940 when Chevron first opened their refinery in Richmond this made the air quality significantly bad in a little period of time. The African American population alone, increased from 270 people in 1940 to 10,438 people in 1943. This isn’t a coincidence, they did this on purpose. They moved all the low income Africa Americans to where the air quality is bad. They didn’t have enough money to make a different decision. The people with the money wouldn’t move to a place where the air quality is bad so the corporation knows what they were doing to the air and the neighborhoods around it. They knew that since no one with the money would live by the oil refinery, they could sell it to the low income communities.

Jade Harper my fellow classmate has this same problem. She lives in Richmond next to Chevron’s oil refinery and she said “the water is nasty and it’s not clear, it’s a cloudy color” the oil refinery is getting into their community water. She also said “The air is gassy and sometimes hard to breathe in”. Jade also is a victim of asthma, Jade says she wasn’t born with asthma but when she moved to Richmond at the age of two she starting receiving asthma attacks a year later.
